11/7//08 Lake Orion vs Romeo W 24-23
The game tonight between the Dragons and the Romeo Bulldogs was another great playoff game between these 2 football powerhouses. Tonight’s game was another great win for the Dragons and another tough loss for the Bulldogs.
This game was a tale of 2 halves. The first half started out with a quick score by the Dragons when on their first possession of the game Freshman QB Sean Charette Led Sophomore Dan Ney perfectly on a pass down the sidelines that ended with a 73 yard TD reception. A little later in the quarter the Dragons got 3 more points on a Jeff Heath 32 yard field goal. The defense struggled to stop a tough Romeo running game and the Romeo Passing game was able to make enough plays to keep drives going enabling the Bulldogs to take a half time lead of 23 to 10.
The second half was a new ball game for the Dragons. In the 3rd quarter the Dragons scored 2 touchdowns on 2 more passes by Charette. One TD was a 35 yard catch by Jeff Heath followed by a very nice run to get into the end zone. The other TD was a 19 yard completion to Charles Fleck converting a 4th and long. The score was now 24 to 23 Dragons.
Then the game got real exciting. It was like 2 boxers late in a fight throwing haymakers and doing damage to the opponent but unable to land the knock out punch. Both teams turned the ball over, both teams moved the ball on offense. Both teams made big plays on defense. With 5 minutes to go in the game the Bulldogs attempted a 35 yard field goal. The kick was wide left so the Dragons were now in the driver seat to close out the game. The Dragons were not able to run all the time off the clock so they punted one last time and the Bulldogs took over with 1:30 left on their own 30 yard. The Dragon defense rose to the occasion and 4 plays later the Dragons took over on downs. One more snap by Charette and for the second year in a row the Dragons win the District championship against Romeo.
Next week the Dragons will face Sterling Heights Stevenson, who Beat Macomb Dakato to avenge their only loss of the season. Go out to Sterling Heights and see the Regional championship game.
